The Oak Bluffs Police Department has several officers who are certified to operate and patrol on police mountain bicycles during their tour of duty. The bikes are used primarily during the spring, summer and fall months. They provide officers with an effective community policing tool by allowing personal interaction between officers and citizens which is not possible in a police cruiser.
The bikes also allow officers to access off-road areas and crowded downtown hot spots in a more efficient manner than on foot or in a cruiser.
Officers assigned to a mountain bike have completed a state certified police bicycle training program.
